High School Grade Classification

In Houston ISD, a student’s high school grade level is determined by the total number of credits earned, in accordance with HISD Board Policy EIE(LOCAL). Grade classification is updated annually and reflects a student’s progression toward graduation requirements.

Performing & Visual Arts

Art I

Grades: 8 Only

Prerequisite: Completion of 6th and 7th grade art, portfolio submission, and approval by art directors.

This course introduces the elements and principles of design through exploration of a broad range of media. Activities emphasize skills and techniques in areas such as drawing, painting, graphics, fibers, ceramics, art history, and three-dimensional design.

STEM / CTE

Principles of Information Technology

Grades: 8

Prerequisite: Meets or Masters on most recent Math STAAR assessment

This course introduces students to the fundamental principles of information technology and its applications in the modern world. Topics include computer hardware and software, basic programming, networking, cybersecurity, data analysis, and web design. Through hands-on projects using industry-standard tools, students build skills in problem-solving, collaboration, and ethical decision-making. This course prepares students for further study in computer science and IT-related fields.

Mathematics

Algebra I

Grades: 7–8

Prerequisite: Placement Exam & approved score on the HISD Algebra Qualification Matrix

This course focuses on developing students' understanding of algebraic concepts such as expressions, equations, inequalities, functions, linear and quadratic relationships, and systems of equations. Emphasis is placed on graphing, reasoning, and solving real-world problems using algebraic strategies.

Geometry I

Grades: 8

Prerequisite: Algebra I

Students are introduced to foundational geometry concepts including points, lines, angles, shapes, congruence, similarity, transformations, the Pythagorean theorem, and coordinate geometry. Emphasis is placed on logical reasoning, geometric proofs, and applications to real-world contexts. This course builds a strong base for future mathematical studies.

Languages Other Than English (LOTE)

Chinese I

Grades: 7–8

Prerequisite: None

This introductory course explores Mandarin Chinese language and culture, focusing on pronunciation, basic grammar, vocabulary, Chinese characters, and everyday conversation skills.

Chinese II

Grades: 8 Only

Prerequisite: Chinese I

This course builds on Chinese I with expanded grammar, reading comprehension, writing, speaking, and cultural literacy in Mandarin Chinese.

French I

Grades: 7–8

Prerequisite: None

An introduction to French language and culture emphasizing pronunciation, basic grammar, everyday vocabulary, and conversation skills.

French II

Grades: 8 Only

Prerequisite: French I

Continues development from French I with more advanced grammar structures, vocabulary, conversation practice, and cultural exploration.

Spanish I

Grades: 7–8

Prerequisite: None

Students are introduced to Spanish language and culture with a focus on speaking, listening, reading, and writing in common situations.

Spanish II

Grades: 8 Only

Prerequisite: Spanish I

Builds upon skills developed in Spanish I, deepening vocabulary, grammar, fluency, and cultural understanding through conversation and media.
