From Classroom to Confident Independence

We are here to support you! If you have any questions, please contact our Special Education Department Chairperson, Maria Azios, at mazios@houstonisd.org.

Program Overview

The Preparing Students for Independence (PSI) program is a specialized service designed to meet the needs of students identified with multiple disabilities. These may include:

  • Sensory impairments
  • Moderate to severe cognitive impairments
  • Moderate to severe communication impairments
  • Significant medical needs

Instruction is aligned with the TEKS Curriculum Framework and is designed for students assessed using the STAAR Alternate 2 assessment.

The PSI program serves students aged 3 to 22 whose disabilities significantly impact their cognitive and developmental performance. Placement in the PSI program is determined by the student’s Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) committee through the Individualized Education Program (IEP) process.

Regional Support

T.H. Rogers serves students who reside in the HISD West Region and whose unique needs cannot be appropriately met at their home campus. Student placement is coordinated through the Office of Special Education Services.

In addition to core academic instruction, students participate in enrichment classes such as Music, Art, and Physical Education.

Curriculum Design

Each student receives an integrated educational program tailored to their IEP. Key elements include:

  • Implementation of the Motor Activities Training Program (MATP), a Special Olympics initiative focused on motor skills development
  • Collaborative team approach involving teachers, paraprofessionals, parents, and service providers

Additional support team members may include:

  • Speech and language therapist
  • Occupational therapist
  • Physical therapist
  • Orientation and mobility specialist
  • Itinerant teacher for students with auditory or visual impairments

Eligibility for related services is determined through the ARD committee process.
